1. What Data Do We Collect?

Short Answer: Nothing

ReadLens does not collect any personal data. All data is stored locally on your device.

Detailed Explanation

ReadLens stores the following data only on your device:

• Saved Articles: Web content you choose to save
• AI Summaries: Summaries generated by your API Key (if enabled)
• Tags and Notes: Tags and personal notes you add to articles
• Settings: Your app preferences (theme, language, etc.)
• API Keys: Your AI service API Keys (encrypted locally)

All of the above data is stored only on your device. The ReadLens team cannot access it.

2. How Do We Use Your Data?

ReadLens does not use or access your data because:

• ✅ No Server: No backend server collecting data
• ✅ No Account System: No registration or login required
• ✅ No Data Upload: Data never leaves your device
• ✅ No Third-Party Tracking: No Google Analytics or any tracking tools

3. AI Features & API Keys

Your API Keys

• Encrypted Storage: API Keys are stored with AES-256 encryption on your device
• Direct Connection: ReadLens sends your content directly to AI providers (OpenAI, Claude, etc.)
• No Middleman: We have no intermediate servers; we cannot see or log your requests
• Your Control: You can delete or change API Keys anytime

Data Transfer to AI Providers

When you use AI summary features:

• Your article content is sent directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider
• This data does not go through ReadLens servers (we don't have any)
• Please review each AI provider's privacy policy:

  • Google (Gemini) Privacy Policy

4. Chrome Extension Permissions

ReadLens requires the following Chrome permissions:

Purpose: Read content from the webpage you're viewing to save articles

Data Destination: Stored only on your local device

Purpose: Store articles, settings, and API Keys on your device

Data Destination: Stored only in your local Chrome storage

contextMenus (Context Menu)

Purpose: Provide right-click quick save functionality

Data Destination: No data collection

Purpose: Show save success/failure notifications

Data Destination: No data collection

Purpose: Extract content from webpages and connect to AI provider APIs

Data Destination: Only sent to your chosen AI provider (if AI features enabled)

5. Third-Party Services

ReadLens itself does not use any third-party services. However:

Optional AI Services (BYOK)

If you choose to enable AI summary features and provide your own API Key:

• Your article content will be sent to your chosen AI provider
• These providers have their own privacy policies
• ReadLens will not see or log these transmissions

Services We Don't Use

• ❌ Any form of usage tracking

6. Data Security

Local Encryption

• API Keys are stored with AES-256 encryption
• Encryption keys are stored in your browser
• Even if someone accesses your device storage, they cannot read API Keys without decryption keys

Input Validation

• All user input is validated and sanitized
• Protection against XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) attacks
• HTML content is automatically sanitized

7. Data Retention & Deletion

Data Retention

Since all data is stored on your device:

• Data remains until you actively delete it
• You can clear all data in settings anytime
• Uninstalling the extension automatically deletes all ReadLens data

How to Delete Data

1. Delete Individual Articles: Click delete button in article list
2. Clear All Data: Settings → Data Management → Delete All Data
3. Complete Removal: Uninstall ReadLens extension from Chrome

8. Children's Privacy

ReadLens is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children (in fact, we don't collect anyone's data).

9. Privacy Policy Changes

If we change this privacy policy:

• We'll update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page
• Major changes will be announced in extension update notes
• You can always view the latest version of the privacy policy

10. Your Rights

Since ReadLens doesn't collect any data, traditional data subject rights (access, correction, deletion, etc.) don't apply.

But you have complete control:

• ✅ View, edit, or delete your local data anytime
• ✅ Export your data anytime (JSON, Markdown, CSV formats)
• ✅ Disable or remove AI features anytime
• ✅ Full control over your API Keys
